Scripture Reading: Proverbs 8:1-3, 22-36

In [the Son] all things were created … all things have been created through him and for him.
Colossians 1:16

Summertime often gives us an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and to take in some of the beauty of God’s world—and that is what we hope to do this month. Sometimes we’ll talk about sights we can see while traveling, and sometimes we’ll talk about things we observe in our everyday surroundings.

When my wife and I had young children and we’d take a road trip, we’d often play a guessing game to pass the time. One of our favorites was to say “I spy with my little eye … something blue”—or whatever color the object was that we wanted the other person to guess.

This month we’ll be doing something like that as we catch sight of things that give us a glimpse of God’s wisdom in this world. The apostle Paul reminds us in Colossians 1 that the earth and all creation are made by God through and for the Son, Jesus. Some of the implications of this profound claim can be found in Proverbs 8. Fundamental to creation, older than the universe itself, is the wisdom of God that finds its fulfillment in the person of Jesus Christ.

So let’s ask God to help us discover things we may have missed before. Perhaps we can develop a habit of connecting everyday things in this world to the wisdom of God, “for those who find [wisdom] find life and receive favor from the LORD.”

Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for creating such a magnificent world. Open our eyes to the wisdom and meaning to be found in the every-day things of life. Help us to grow in wisdom. Through Jesus, Amen.

Thank you Lord for letting us see your power and glory through the things You created. Thank you almighty Lord for opening our spiritual eyes to see what others cannot. Thank you gracious Lord for giving us faith to believe in You. We recognize that we belong to You only and not to ourselves. Through Jesus our savior, Amen.
