Isaiah 40:28
A gentle and humble spirit is fostered in us when we remember our true place. God is the Creator; we are his creatures. He is the Potter; we are the clay that he shapes according to his purposes (see Jeremiah 18:5-6).
The people to whom Isaiah prophesied thought far too much of themselves. They had forgotten that before Almighty God “the nations are like a drop in a bucket,” and the people of the earth “are like grasshoppers.”
“Do you not know?” Isaiah asked them. “Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.”
God is the one who “brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.”
God is the craftsman “who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name.”
No one can be compared to the Lord Almighty. No one is his equal!
It’s not that we have no significance. On the contrary, each person has immeasurable worth, for we are made in God’s image and created to be in relationship with the one true God.
But we need to be reminded that our worth is a gift of God. Our value has been given, not earned. We have to have that perspective if humility and gentleness are going to flourish in us.
Prayer
God, we acknowledge that in the midst of your tremendous power and presence, we are like fine dust. Help us remember that all we are and have is a gift from you. Amen.

Very good post. The blending of the reminder to be humble with the reminder that God doesn’t make junk is one I’ve never heard before. So often churches focus only on the direction to be humble. They rarely talk about our worth as a creation of God. It’s like humility and being a creation of God are mutually exclusive, and they’re not. Thank you for putting the two together as I believe God intended them to be.
